FILMMAKING

Winter/Spring Course Offerings 2009


The Filmmaking program is a progressive and comprehensive curriculum that offer introductory through advanced filmmaking. The program focuses on the fundamentals of filmmaking technique, with emphasis placed on the pre-production process, executing a wellconceived plan, visual storytelling, and artistic style. Students use professional equipment including Panasonic DVX-100 cameras, Sennheiser microphones, Arri and Lowel lights and Final Cut Express editing software.
Students work in a hands-on environment to develop their skills in, and understanding of, the pre-production/ production process and post-production editing techniques.

Students in intermediate and advanced classes work as an ensemble to create a short film from the planning and pre-production stages through production and editing. Advanced students engage in yearlong projects in the Conservatory or Independent Study programs.

In addition, Imagination Stage offers skill-based, digital media classes in computer animation, digital imaging, stop-motion animation, and documentary filmmaking.

Grades 2 - 5

Create a Film Together
Parent and child team up to learn the basics of film production and video technology while creating a short documentary on a subject of their choosing. The team develops the concept, shoots and edits the video ready for a family screening. Teams must be prepared to work extensively outside of class. <back to top>

Grades 5-8

An Introduction to Filmaking
In this hands-on class, students learn the craft of narrative filmmaking and how to express their ideas cinematically in various projects and exercises. This introductory course covers the process of pre production (including story development and breakdown, coverage, shooting scripts, and scheduling), the techniques of production (including cinematography: composition, lens and light) and basic sound recording. Students will learn the post-production process using Final Cut Express editing software. <back to top>

An Introduction to Filmaking: Part II
Returning students apply their filmmaking knowledge in a collaborative environment to make a complete short film. The class, rotating in various crew positions, works on a single project with multiple locations and characters, going through the process of pre-production, production, and post-production (editing).
Pre-requisite: Introduction to Film: Part I or Summer Filmmaking Camp. <back to top>

Intermediate Filmaking: Part II *
Students apply their filmmaking knowledge in a collaborative environment to make a complete short film. Students rotate in various crew positions, work on a single project with multiple locations and characters, and through the process of preproduction, production, and post-production (editing).

Teens

An Introduction to Filmaking

Advanced Filmaking: Part II*

Over the course of the school year, students work as an ensembleto create a complex multilocation short production. Using techniques learned in previous classes and camps, students will design the project with artistic intent and go through the production process as a team. Each tudent will be the editor of his or her own project usingthe material shot, and learn the higher level processes and art of post production. In this class, students will also be introduced to the craft and art of lighting design.

Screenwriting
Students learn the mechanics of screenwriting, from structure to dialogue. Using writing students exercises, will work on writing techniques such as character development, tone, themes, and problem solving. Work outside of class is required.

Computer Animation
For the true computer enthusiast, this course teaches the fundamentals of digital 2-D animation and gaming. Students learn the basics of Flash computer software and create short animation projects.

Filmmaking: Independent Study
For serious film students who have completed the Conservatory Film Class, this program offers the student a chance to be auteur on his or her own project. With guidance from a mentor/ teacher, the student will write, produce, direct, and edit a short film of their choosing. Imagination Stage Digital Media Department resources will be made available to checkout for the implementation of the project including cameras, sound and lighting equipment, and various filmmaking peripherals.
