MUSICAL THEATRE CLASSES

ACTING

This skill-based class is designed to introduce student actors to techniques for creating sustainable and believable characters for the stage. The focus is on building ensemble, listening skills and creativity, using basic scene work.

TEEN IMPROV TROUPE

This class takes students on an exploration of character creation, storytelling, and the nature of ensemble work, all while honing a rapier-like wit. Students work on developing listening skills, spontaneity and creativity which they then unleash on an unsuspecting audience. Registration requires permission of the mentor.

SENIOR SHAKESPEARE

Students explore the work of the Bard using monologues, duologues and scenes while building their acting technique, speech (verse and prose) and physical characterization. Registration requires permission of the mentor.

STAGE COMBAT

(GRADES 8-12)
This class is an exciting and stimulating introduction to the techniques of stage fighting. Students will learn the principles of safe physical interaction on stage by working on pre-choreographed fights (hand-to-hand, basic weaponry). Students are also given the opportunity to write a scene that evolves into a fight sequence. This challenging class works on physical discipline, high levels of focus and concentration, risk-taking and trust within the ensemble.

Musical Theatre Conservatory Prep
Grades 7-10
This class builds upon the acting, voice and dance technique acquired in the “Fundamentals of Music Theatre” class. This class is for students interested in auditioning for Imagination Stage’s Musical Theatre Conservatory or other musical theatre opportunities. Students continue to expand both their musicianship skills and vocal technique as they explore how to apply skills to the interpretation of text and music as an actor. Students also learn stage awareness and technique, rehearsal etiquette and how to choose appropriate material for auditions. Recommended for students who are interested in auditioning for Musical Theatre Conservatory in December.

Audition Prep Workshop

GRADES 6-12 permission required

This intensive class focuses on the selection and preparation of appropriate material for middle, high school and college auditions. Students learn to establish believable circumstances and sustainable characters in monologues. For an additional fee, students may schedule time with the filmmaking department to have their monologues recorded on VHS or DVD for summer program or college auditions.

Musical Theatre Audition Prep Workshop

GRADES 6-12 permission required
This intensive class focuses on the selection and preparation of appropriate material for middle, high school and college musical theatre auditions. For an additional fee, students may schedule time with the filmmaking department to have their songs recorded on VHS or DVD for summer program or college auditions.

Creating the Physical Character Workshop

GRADES 6-12 permission required
One of the unique challenges for the actor is how to create a distinctive physical presence for a character. In this workshop, students explore a variety of concepts and techniques for building a believable physical character. Work includes discovering how to relax and free the body, how to find a master-gesture, how to find the spine and walk of a character, how to use animals, portraits, music, and inanimate objects as inspiration for exploring and creating a unique interpretation of a text-based character.

Creating the Vocal Character Workshop

GRADES 6-12 permission required
Creating a distinctive voice for a character and also having good diction and a strong supported sound are imperative for an actor. In this workshop, students work on the techniques for freeing the voice, exploring the range of the voice, as well as connecting the voice to the body. Some elementary work on diction and dialect is also explored.

The Art of Funny! Workshop

GRADES 6-12 permission required
This workshop is designed to introduce students to the rules and techniques of comedy, and the different styles of comedy in the theatre (from Shakespeare to modern plays). Physical and verbal comedy, as well as comic timing, stage business and character choices are explored.

Directing- A Crash Course Workshop

GRADES 6-12 permission required
This workshop is designed for the student who is interested in pursuing directing opportunities, but also for actors who want to be able to translate what a director is saying to their own work. This class explores the overall role of the director, how to break down the action of a play scene-by-scene, the basics of blocking and staging, and how to organize the rehearsal process.

FILMMAKING

Program Overview:

Like all artistic disciplines at Imagination Stage, the Filmmaking Program is process oriented. These unique classes begin with fundamentals in introductory courses and progress through advanced studies and sophisticated projects using state-of-the-art equipment. Students are encouraged to be creative and to find their own artistic voice in a collaborative and non-competitive environment. Introduction to Filmmaking

Students learn the craft of narrative filmmaking and how to express their ideas cinematically. This introductory course covers pre-production, production, and post-production. The class works on editing exercises and in the spring semester, students return to produces a short film from design to completion. Tuition is per semester.

Filmmaking (for returning students)

In these continuation classes students refine their understanding of the film craft. The class collaborates on projects using multiple locations and characters while stretching their artistic wings. Students gain a more in-depth knowledge of the story and pre-production process, production techniques, and editing. Participation in these returning classes requires a 2-semester commitment to allow the time needed to complete projects. Tuition is per semester. Returning students should contact the mentor for proper class placement.

Digital Imaging

(GRADES 6-12)
Learn the basics of digital photo manipulation with Photoshop! Using their photos, professional photographs and their imagination, students enhance and manipulate the images into a new expression. Each student completes a digital portfolio of their creative work to take home at the end of the semester.

Documentary Filmmaking

(GRADES 6-12)
Working on their own individual projects, students choose a subject and create a short documentary. They learn how to organize a project, research, interview, shoot the material, and edit using Final Cut Express. Students must be willing and able to work independently outside of class. Participation in this class requires a 2-semester commitment to allow the time needed to complete projects. Tuition is per semester, additional equipment deposit may apply.

Program Overview:

DanceTheatre, developed by Veronika Farkas, is Imagination Stage's unique dance program.  It is a fusion of dance and theatre based on Imagination Stage's multidisciplinary approach to learning. Emerging dancers of all ages receive a strong, well-rounded foundation in dance technique to learn how to communicate with an audience. They learn to think creatively and express themselves through dance.

Hip Hop

(GRADES 6-12)
This high energy class is a fun workout for all students who like to move! Students learn hip hop skills including isolation, floor work and breakdancing.

Stretch Class

(GRADES 6-12)
Dancers develop core and over all body strength along with flexibility in this conditioning class for dancers—great for athletes too!

Musical Theatre Dance Prep
(GRADES 8 - 12)
Designed for students who wish to improve their musical theatre dance technique, this class covers jazz and tap technique and develops students’ performance skills.

Lyrical Jazz

(GRADES 8-12)
This fun class is perfect for jazz dance lovers! Students advance their jumps and turns along with flexibility and performing skills with a concentration on center and across-the-floor work.

Teen Hip Hop Troupe

(GRADES 8-12)
This advanced class is designed for students who have taken and completed either the Music Video or Urban Funk classes or have previous Hip Hop experience. It incorporates more complicated isolation and floor work, including break dancing moves. This class is designed as a 2-semester program including an opportunity for performance in the spring semester. Tuition is per semester.

Urban Funk Dance Production

(GRADES 9-12)
This high energy, fast-paced class is a fun workout for students who are new or returning to dance. Students learn hip hop combined with street dancing. This class is designed as a 2-semester program with the production of a Hip Hop DVD in the second semester. Tuition is per semester.

Ballet/Modern Technique

(GRADES 9-12)
This class builds on the basics of ballet to introduce students to the flow of modern dance. Students develop their skills in barre and center-floor-work to develop flexibility and strength.

Dance Ensemble Prep

(GRADES 9-12)
This class incorporates ballet, jazz and modern techniques while teaching audition etiquette. Students will also learn ways of picking up fast-paced dance audition material. This class is recommended for students with dance experience and Dance Conservatory graduates.

Teen Pilates

(AGES 13-18)
This new class is perfect for teens seeking to build flexibility, strength, endurance, and coordination. Class workouts condition young bodies to have better posture, be less prone to injury, and most of all to experience better overall health.

Conservatories & Performing Ensembles

These by audition, acting, musical theatre, dance and filmmaking programs are designed for students at who have demonstrated a commitment to their craft as performers and who have shown potential in their talent and a positive attitude in their work. In all programs, students work with like-minded peers and professional actors and academics in the Washington, DC area.
