FILMMAKING

The Filmmaking program is a progressive and comprehensive curriculum that offer introductory through advanced filmmaking. The program focuses on the fundamentals of filmmaking technique, with emphasis placed on the pre-production process, executing a wellconceived plan, visual storytelling, and artistic style. Students use professional equipment including Panasonic DVX-100 cameras, Sennheiser microphones, Arri and Lowel lights and Final Cut Express editing software.
Students work in a hands-on environment to develop their skills in, and understanding of, the pre-production/ production process and post-production editing techniques.

Students in intermediate and advanced classes work as an ensemble to create a short film from the planning and pre-production stages through production and editing. Advanced students engage in yearlong projects in the Conservatory or Independent Study programs.

In addition, Imagination Stage offers skill-based, digital media classes in computer animation, digital imaging, stop-motion animation, and documentary filmmaking.

Teens

Computer Animation
For the true computer enthusiast, this course teaches the fundamentals of digital 2-D animation and gaming. Students learn the basics of Flash computer software and create short animation projects. (SUMMER CAMP STILL AVAILABLE)

Screenwriting
Students learn the mechanics of screenwriting, from structure to dialogue. Using writing exercises, students will work on writing techniques such as character development, tone, themes, and problem solving. Work outside of class is required.

Introduction to Filmmaking
In this hands-on class, students learn the craft of narrative filmmaking and how to express their ideas cinematically in various projects and exercises. This introductory course covers the process of pre-production (including story development and breakdown, coverage, shooting scripts, and scheduling), the techniques of production (including cinematography: composition, lens’ and light) and basic sound recording. Students will learn the post-production process using Final Cut Express editing software. (**two-semester class)

Intermediate Filmmaking
Students apply their filmmaking knowledge in a collaborative environment to make a complete short film. Students rotate in various crew positions, work on a single project with multiple locations and characters, and go through the process of pre-production, production, and post-production (editing). Pre-requisite: Introduction to Film or Summer Filmmaking Camp. (**two-semester class)

Advanced Filmmaking
Over the course of the school year, students work as an ensemble to create a complex multi-location short production. Using techniques learned in previous classes and camps, students will design the project with artistic intent and go through the production process as a team. Each student will be the editor of his or her own project using the material shot, and learn the higher level processes and art of post-production. In this class, students will also be introduced to the craft and art of lighting design. (**two-semester class)

Documentary Filmmaking
Working as a team on a full-scale documentary project, students learn how to organize, research, interview, shoot, and edit. Documentary styles and the craft of telling a factual story visually are the focus of this hands-on class. Students must be prepared to work extensively outside of class.

Filmmaking: Independent Study
For serious film students who have completed the Conservatory Film Class, this program offers the student a chance to be auteur on his or her own project. With guidance from a mentor/teacher, the student will write, produce, direct, and edit a short film of their choosing. Imagination Stage Digital Media Department resources will be made available to checkout for the implementation of the project including cameras, sound and lighting equipment, and various filmmaking peripherals. Permission of instructor required.
