IQ's Learning to Read, Reading to Learn residencies bring arts-based lessons into the school classroom. Focusing on core curricular content and age-appropriate state standards for learning (pre-K to 12thgrade), an IQ team member works with the classroom teacher and students during the school day to explore English/Language Arts, Science, Math, and/or Social Studies content. The length of the residency may vary from one "workshop" lesson to a full nine-lesson unit.

Each lesson is based on the use of the body, voice, mind, and imagination within a sequence that begins with entry into a content area through vocabulary words and culminates with student ownership of the content. The lessons are designed for implementation within a classroom period. As a whole, they build on each other to provide a cumulative experience. Teachers are encouraged to adapt the lessons to suit particular classroom situations.

The IQ lesson template is a complement to--not a substitute for--curriculum. It should provide a foundation-not a blueprint-for active, experiential learning that we hope will excite teachers--and students-to engage in deep and meaningful learning experiences.
